Back in the room, nine hours a day
Back in a room, for a full working day.
This July OpenWise Learning met in person again, and ran a full working day. Eight in the morning to five in the evening.
Last summer ran three hours a day on a screen. This summer opened the doors and kept them open for nine.
Fifteen numbered days of curriculum came out of it, Day 1 on July 12 through Day 15 on July 30.
Why the day got longer
Partly because we could. Mostly because of what the previous eighteen months had done.
Scholars arriving this July had spent a year and a half learning through a laptop screen. Whatever they had lost was not going to be recovered in three-hour mornings. The nine-hour day was a deliberate over-correction by an organization that had watched a pandemic happen to its students.
It is also the moment OWL stopped being a summer enrichment program in any recognisable sense. Nine hours a day for three weeks is not enrichment. It is a job.
The fall comes next
Academic Year Sessions resume on September 25, back on weekends.
